Geographic Information Systems

State-of-the–art equipment and technical expertise allow HAI to conduct in-depth research and gather comprehensive data. Geologic, geophysical, hydrologic, and environmental resources are investigated thoroughly and accurate information is compiled. Projects such as 3-D subsurface mapping, bathymetric lake mapping, contaminant plume mapping, and wetland delineation and mapping are successfully completed by HAI’s professional staff using current information technologies.
Geologic Mapping
Landfill Closure Studies, Woodard and Curran, Inc., ME
Conducted hydrogeologic investigations for landfill closure designs at municpal landfills in Windham, Wells, and Falmouth.
River Crossings, Algonquin Gas Transmission Co., ME
Mapped geologic conditions and potential hazards at a planned river crossing for high pressure gas transmission main. Managed on-shore and off-shore seismic reflection and refraction surveys. Made recommendations regarding alignment and mode of pipeline construction.
Uncontrolled Hazardous Waste Sites, Humboldt National Graphics, Inc., ME
Conducted hydrogeologic investigation of TCE and DCE site regulated by MDEP under uncontrolled site program. Characterized site geology, contaminant plume geometry, and chemical aspects of site contamination and remediation.
Stream Crossing Design and Installation, Tilton Pond Watershed, ME
Performed a hydrologic evaluation of the stream watershed and engineered measures to prevent chronic flooding damage. Engineered sizing and installation of two culverts, stabilized existing overflow lip to prevent continued road shoulder washouts.
Submerged Lands Mapping
Watershed Assessment/Bathymetric Mapping, Newport Water District, ME
Conducted detailed resource and watershed assessment of Nokomis Pond, Newports main water source, including bathymetric mapping. Determined the elevation-based capacity of the resource. Digitized town tax maps with parcels located within the ponds watershed. Integrated bathymetry maps and digitized tax maps into a GIS model to be used as an effective resource management-planning tool.
Bathymetry Data Collection Procedure and Process Development, Maine Technology Institute/Internal
HAI was awarded a Seed Grant to develop a methodology for mapping the bathymetry of Maine’s surface waters, and to complete bathymetric mapping of three popular Maine lakes. The research and development project is referred to as Surface Water Information Mapping, or S.W.I.M.
Geophysical Studies and Mapping
GIS Data Compilation, KCSWCD, Towns of Readfield, ME
Digitized town tax maps for integration into a GIS based planning model. The resultant data layer provided an efficient means of evaluating a variety of watershed characteristics relative to land ownership. Identified candidate parcels for potential conservation work along the East Branch of the Sheepscot Watershed.
Marine Facilities, Fourth of July Creek Project, City of Seward, AK
Conducted on-shore and off-shore investigations of an undeveloped site for a ship–lift and repair facility and marine industrial site. Employed geophysical techniques, side-scan sonar, deep drilling, and geologic mapping to characterize the site.
Geophysical Surveys, Gravity Wave Observatory, California Inst. of Technology, ME
Worked with site selection and design engineers from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Cal. Tech. to investigate for below-ground gravity wave observatory and laser experiment station at Pineo Ridge in Columbia Falls, ME.
Geotechnical Instrument Monitoring, Waste Management Landfill, ME
Installed and monitored slope inclinometers, vibrating wire piezometer and open well piezometer in geotechnical study of slope failure on deep marine clay at commercial landfill.
Land Use / Environmental Resource Analysis
Nitrate and Phosphorous Studies, Saliba Development Corp., ME
Quantified pre–development water quality and planned cluster development to minimize nitrogen and phosphorous impacts on a nearby municipal water supply.
Geomorphic Evaluation and Non-point Source Risk Analysis, Kettle Creek Watershed, PA
Conducted Level I Rosgen river classification and remote non-point source analysis for the Kettle Creek Watershed Management Plan. Created modeling and calibration of watershed nutrient and sediment loading rates using the GWLF (Generalized Watershed Loading Function) model and the development of a DEM-based risk assessment tool to evaluate potential sediment delivery from watershed roadways.
Environmental Monitoring, Waste Management Disposal Services, Maine
Facilitated sampling and analysis of 41 ground water wells, 9 surface water sites, 19 leachate collection points and 20 landfill gas monitoring stations. Managed budget, sampling and supervised sampling crew. Interpreted, evaluated, and reported the physical and chemical data to the appropriate regulatory agencies.
Well Head Protection, Department of Environmental Protection, ME
Bass Harbor. Mapped land uses and managed Well Head Protection Assessment (WHPA) 2-D model of contributing ground water flow to well.
Watershed Management and Phosphorus Export Mode, Name Confidential, ME
Used GIS to analyze phosphorus export based on slope, soil, and proximity to water body, to find areas of maximum phosphorus export in watershed.
