Sinkhole Subsurface Geotechnical Mapping

Client: Maine Department of Transportation
Location: Rockland, ME
A sinkhole that measured 25 feet across and 65 feet deep consumed a section of a main road in Rockland, Maine. The hole occurred when the roof of a limestone tunnel adjacent to a quarry collapsed about 30 feet below the road bed. HAI performed a Very Low Frequency (VLF) geophysical survey for MEDOT to delineate the shape of the sinkhole and tunnel, and interpret the geologic and fracture flow hydrogeology of the site.
